Introduction
We don’t always end up where we thought we would — and sometimes, that’s the best thing that can happen. My journey into health care didn’t start with Traditional Chinese Medicine, but somewhere along the way, I found myself drawn to ancient wisdom, natural healing, and a deeper connection to people. This is the story of how I started over, found my purpose, and discovered the magic of TCM — at 45 years old.
Finding My First Path
When I first started down the road to becoming a Health Care Practitioner, I had no idea I would find my passion in Traditional Chinese Medicine for healing. I started my first degree in my 20s and graduated with a Bachelor of Recreation. At that point in my life, I had big aspirations of becoming the best Certified Recreational Therapist I could be. I dreamed of research, publishing papers, and eventually pursuing a Master’s and PhD. But those dreams came crashing down when the reality of paying bills and raising a child on my own set in. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was completely unprepared for the real world — a place where everything feels like a competition and hopes and dreams can get dashed quickly.
“Sometimes, you do what you have to do — until you can do what you want.”
Exploring Alternative Healing
So, I pivoted. I took classes in Reiki, Aromatherapy and continued studying alternative healing therapies — mostly because I didn’t know I could realistically go back to school to become a Western medical doctor. And honestly? I’m grateful I didn’t. I would have ended up further in debt and completely burnt out. In the meantime, I made the most of where I was. I used my leadership skills from my degree, learning how to manage a team, speaking one-on-one, and conducting consultations. Sure, I was managing retail and selling products — but it all counts, right?
Then that Moment I started to Dream Again
I’ll never forget working at a school contact center and meeting one of the educators there. She gave a presentation on Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture.. and something clicked. I felt like I was too old to go back at 30, and that my background was too corporate to change. But after a conversation with her **thank you, Gillian M.** I truly felt in my gut that this was the path I was meant to take. It was on me to figure out how to make it happen.
Returning to School — At 45 There were a few false starts along the way, but eventually, I quit my job in payroll and returned to school — at 45. Who does that? Well… apparently I do. And I’m so grateful I did. As a practitioner, I’m constantly learning and expanding my knowledge. Three thousand years of history and practice doesn’t get absorbed in a few years — and I love it. I love the logic and common sense behind it, but also the magic — seeing real improvements in my clients and watching them reach their goals. It’s all about helping someone live their best life. But isn’t that what Recreation Therapy was all about, too?
